Choosing the Right PLT Program for you.
When law firms hire, they want more than just an understanding of legislation, case law and legal principles. Sure, understanding the law is important, but employers tell us they also need lawyers who can:
They also want someone who is confident in their ability from day one. This is possible with the right guidance and support during Practical Legal Training.
That’s why practical learning in a simulated law firm environment, with practising lawyers acting as your mentor, is so important. And, why the whole lawyer concept is also important. It’s about being emotionally intelligent, adaptable and ethical. It’s about knowing how to use your legal knowledge in the real world, where things don’t always go to plan.
How the Leo Cussen PLT Program Prepares You
PLT at Leo Cussen is designed to give you more than just textbook knowledge. It focuses on giving you practical, hands-on experience through rotations, just like in a real law firm. You’ll move through several key areas of law, building the skills you’ll need to become that whole lawyer employers are looking for.
The program starts with an induction rotation. This is your introduction to legal practice, where you’ll make the transition from law school to a simulated legal office environment. You’ll get to know the practical side of being a lawyer—how things work day-to-day in the legal profession and what’s expected of you as a lawyer.
In the transactions rotation, you’ll represent a “client” in buying or selling a business, as well as managing property matters. You’ll get hands-on experience with commercial transactions, which will help you develop not just technical legal skills, but also client communication and negotiation abilities.
Next, you’ll move into the specialist rotation, where you can pick two elective areas to focus on. This gives you the chance to deepen your knowledge in a specific area of law. More importantly, you’ll gain skills in client interviews, negotiation and advocacy—skills that go beyond just knowing the law.
In the disputes rotation, you’ll work on advocating for a “client” in a legal dispute, such as a breach of contract case. This is where you’ll learn how to draft court documents, make legal arguments and appear in court. It’s a great chance to build your courtroom skills and practice handling the high-pressure situations lawyers face in litigation – in a simulated law firm environment.
Finally, the program wraps up with a focus on getting you profession-ready. This is where everything you’ve learned comes together. With the mentoring from experienced lawyers throughout the program, you’ll feel confident and supported and ready for admission!
