The Leo Cussen Centre for Law mourns the passing of Professor the Honourable George Hampel AM KC, whose legacy as Chair of Leo Cussen from 1987 to 2000 remains a cornerstone of the Centre’s history.

Known for his exceptional leadership and commitment to advocacy training, Professor Hampel guided the Centre through many critical milestones during his tenure. His determination and resilience during times of uncertainty ensured that Leo Cussen not only survived but also grew into a leading institution for practical legal training.

Professor Hampel’s passion for advocacy was evident in every aspect of his work with the Centre. He played a key role in shaping the early “Practical Training Course”, contributing to countless workshops for students and legal professionals alike. Under his leadership, the Centre also expanded its publications, including Current Criminal Cases, and supported the release of Max Perry’s Hampel on Advocacy, which won an ACLEA Award for Outstanding Achievement. In every initiative he pursued, Professor Hampel’s dedication to the next generation of legal advocates shone brightly. Professor Hampel will be deeply missed by his family, colleagues, and the many students whose lives he touched.
