Who is eligible to do our Practice Management Course?

Anyone can do our Practice Management Course. However, our Course is specifically designed for practitioners who wish to satisfy the skills and expertise requirements for the grant of a Principal Practising Certificate. Our PMC is also suitable for practitioners who simply want to improve their Practice Management knowledge and skills. Our PMC isn’t just a ‘tick the box’ course, it is designed by leading practitioners to significantly improve and enhance your knowledge and skills and place you in the best position to confidently run your practice.

Our PMC is designed to be highly practical, with a focus on learning by doing.

Guided by experts, the course anticipates your journey as a Principal Practitioner, addressing and developing critical skills you’ll need at this next stage of your career.

Three collaborative workshop days cover:

Day 1 – Your Skills, Your Practice 

Reflect on the skills and experience you bring to your principal practice. Discuss your additional ethical obligations as a principal practitioner, identify your ideal clients and how to market yourself in today’s competitive legal environment.

Day 2 – Setting Up For Success

Discuss the critical elements of client engagement. Further develop your leadership style. Learn how to grow a sustainable team and supervise your junior staff.

Day 3 – Working In Your Practice & Planning For The Future 

Discuss systems and structures for financial and matter management. Discover the opportunities and risks that AI & Technology offer you and your firm while setting yourself up for your future.

You will complete learning activities both online and during three live-streamed workshop days that enable interaction, questions and discussion.

  • Completing Your Practice Management Course

    The Practice Management Course (PMC) consists of eight online learning modules with activities followed by a 3-day live streamed workshop.

    Course Components

    The PMC consists of two mandatory components:

    1. Pre-reading and completion of online activities
    2. Attendance and active participation in live streamed workshops on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday, which includes submissions of written analysis of case studies discussed in the workshops.

    You will be assessed as having competently competed all the regulatory requirements of the PMC by:

    • Full completion of all online content and activities
    • Active participation in live streamed workshops and satisfactory completion of workshop case studies
    • A pass mark of at least 50% for all activities

    Full attendance at the live streamed workshop is mandatory and failure to attend or satisfy any of the above requirements can result in you not passing the PMC

    Failure to complete

    If you fail to successfully complete any Module of the Course you may be able to complete the Module in a subsequent Course, subject to availability and payment of the individual Module fee.

    Please note that the Grant of a Principal Practising Certificate Policy for Victoria and the Practice Management Course Guidelines for Victoria require that the Course must be successfully completed within 6 months of beginning the Course.

    Participants must provide their full name as it appears on their Practising Certificate and their Practitioner ID Number in order for the Legal Services Board + Commissioner to be notified of successful completion.

    • Provide comprehensive and quality training and assessment to enable participants to achieve and demonstrate competency in the compulsory Topics as required by the Grant of a Principal Practising Certificate Policy for Victoria and the Practice Management Course Guidelines for Victoria

  • What You Need

    You will be required to join Live Streamed sessions via Zoom.

    If you are a first-time user, you will need to download and install Zoom. The download should take no more than a few minutes; however, you are encouraged to install Zoom at your earliest convenience so as not to miss any valuable information.

    Hardware requirements for Zoom video conference:

    • An internet connection – broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE)
    • Speakers and a microphone – built-in or USB plug-in or wireless Bluetooth
    • A webcam or HD webcam – built-in or USB plug-in or an HD cam or HD camcorder with video capture card

    We recommend the use ofGoogle Chrome to access the online portal and complete the activities.

  • Successful Completion of our PMC

    Participants will be provided with a Certificate of Successful Completion and the Victorian Legal Services Board + Commissioner will be notified of your successful completion of the PMC.

  • Practice Management Course Terms and Conditions

    Payment

    For online bookings, payment must be made by credit card (Visa, MasterCard or AMEX). For all other bookings, payment may be made by credit card (Visa, MasterCard or AMEX), cheque or bank deposit.

    A confirmation email should be received by a registrant, upon booking into a program. A confirmation of payment email should also be received once payment has cleared. Should you not receive a confirmation of payment email please contact us prior to the program to ensure your registration has been processed.

    Bookings will not be processed until payment is received and cleared.

    Entry to a program will not be permitted in circumstances where payment has not been received and cleared prior to the program commencing.

    Program payments are GST inclusive unless specified.

    Discounts

    A discount may be offered on full-priced Course or individual Modules to employees of community legal centres and Tarwirri Members.

    Cancellation

    Registrants who fail to attend or complete the Course are not entitled to a refund.

    Registrations are transferable to another person at the discretion of Leo Cussen Centre for Law.

    Transfers between Course Intakes are available if requested in writing at least 21 days prior to the Course Workshop and subject to availability. An additional fee of $750 will be charged if a transfer is granted.

    Refunds are available if requested in writing at least 21 days prior to the Workshop. An administration fee of $750 will be charged if a refund is granted.

    Program Changes

    Leo Cussen Centre for Law reserves the right to cancel or reschedule programs, change speakers and revise program content.
